About Lambda

Die Lambda-Teamer-Fussballmannschaft

The Youth Network Lambda e.V. was founded on 2 May 1990 by the Zentraler Runder Tisch der Jugend (a youth committee in East Germany) and received a seat and a vote there. Today we represent the interests of young LGBT people at the Deutscher Bundesjugendring (German youth committee), for example.

Our work is funded by the Child and Youth Plan of the Federal Government. Our sign λ is the Greek small letter for “l” and means Lambda. It is a world-wide symbol for gay and lesbian lifestyles and derives from English, where it was chosen as a symbol for the first letter of “liberty” resp. “libertas” (Latin for liberty). In physics, the small Lambda stands for the wavelength, that’s why it is often interpreted as a symbol for the proverbial “common wavelength” of gays and lesbians world-wide.

Lambda represents the interests of young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) in public and politics and we have made it our task to provide support to young LGBT people in their process of self-discovery as well as in psychosocial emergencies.

We are committed to the concerns of education, sex education, counseling and leisure activities, whereas the main work is done by youth volunteers themselves.

We promote personal initiative, self-organisation, participation, mutual understanding, the willingness to cooperation and solidarity based on democratic principles.

We offer a space free of discrimination and the chance to build and cultivate friendships. Our activities focus on the counseling of and by youths, coming-out-groups, holiday courses, weekly youth groups, seminars and much more.

These offers not only give young people the opportunity to spend their leisure time together and to realize themselves, but they also promote and strengthen their social competences.

We promote and support the youths in all these projects and provide awareness training, too.

We stand for acceptance and support of LGBT lifestyles in our society, for gender equality and for the right of all young people to free personal development and free speech.

And we stand for cooperation in LGBT youth work.
